Herzlich willkommen beim Gentechnologiebericht!

Panel Discussion - The Future of Life is Synthetic: The Promises of Xenobiology.

The event is jointly hosted by the interdisciplinary working group Gentechnology Report, the Annual Theme 2015/16 Leibniz: The Task of Visions of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and the Second Conference on Xenobiology. The Science & Society Session is generously funded by the Schering Stiftung.

With the advancements in life sciences in the last years, biologists are now able to extensively manipulate organisms at the DNA level. Only recently researchers in the US have reported engineering a bacterium with a synthetic minimal genome: life artificially stripped down to the bare essentials of only 473 genes. Xenobiologists are even more ambitious – generating genetic systems built from novel synthetic chemicals instead of naturally occurring DNA. But has this brought us any closer to understanding life? And what will be the future impact of such humanly-created synthetic organisms?

A cross-disciplinary panel of renowned experts wills explorer the various potentials of xenobiology. The evening will conclude with a drinks and pretzel reception. For more detailed information on the expert panel and the order of the event refer to the online-flyer.

Admission to the event is free. Please register to or use our online-form.
